![]() ![]() RAM speed (only for huge amounts of encoding jobs)ġ. HD speed (only really for giant HD tasks as even SATA 1 is fast enough!)Ħ. In my experience the following criteria (in order) have the biggest impact on encoding.ĥ. Hope this gives you some useful thoughts. That is to say they are from waffers that have passed more stringent quality control procedures than regular C2Q chips. The reason I recommend the Xeon as opposed to the identical Core2Quad is that although being the same chip, the xeons are usually the cream of the silicon crop. (Contrary to popular belief huge caches do not make real world differences in encoding tasks). However looking at your ideal budget I will recommend to you a chip in another machine I use which is the Socket 775 Xeon x3330, this is 2.66Ghz and has 6MB cache. I'm currently using a socket 775 Xeon x3360 (same chip as the C2Q 9550) which is 2.83GHZ by default and has 12MB cache. Quad core is essential for encoding in my opinion, even if the software only makes use of two say, as there are other background tasks that may (and probably will) utilise a core or two. I spend most of my days encoding things ranging from seconds of low-res stock footage to hours of HD broadcast quality documentary and drama films. ![]()
